Open-air cinemas in Vienna (2024)

Every summer in Vienna, numerous open-air cinemas show films on a wide range of topics. There is free admission to the Music Film Festival at City Hall Square and to the traveling "Volxkino". Original versions with English or German subtitles can often be seen.

At the annual Music Film Festival, Vienna's City Hall Square becomes the meeting point for music lovers and night-owls – because the focus is on music films and culinary delicacies. The range of music films shown covers everything from opera to pop. The Music Film Festival is free and runs all summer long – from June 29 to September 1, 2024. This year, live broadcasts of the European Football Championship will be shown on some days instead of music films. More about public screenings in Vienna.

The Cinema like never before at Augartenspitz presents a mix of popular movie classics and exciting new discoveries from Austria and around the world again from June 27. The motto “Female & Fearless” focuses on quick-witted, independent and fearless film heroines. These include cult films such as “Erin Brockovich” (by Steven Soderbergh from 2000 with Julia Roberts in the leading role), “Lola” by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1981) and more recent productions such as “Anatomy of a Fall”. Birgit Minichmayr portrays an equally strong woman in the Austrian version. At the cinema sessions, classic silent movies will be accompanied by live music. As part of the focus on “100 years of cinema”, special films from 1924 will be screened here, including the iconic Austrian film “Die Sklavenkönigin” and the cinematic gem “Die Stadt ohne Juden”. Culinary delights are supplied by the Grünstern garden kitchen.

The Kino am Dach (Cinema on the Roof) of the Main Library on the Gürtel is entering its 21st season this year and is presenting a diverse selection of coming-of-age films under the motto “Forever 21” in addition to must-see national and international film highlights. The Austrian film “Andrea lässt sich scheiden” by Josef Hader will be screened at the official opening. The fantastic Oscar-winning film “Poor Things” starring Emma Stone will also be screened, as will the touching film “All Of Us Strangers” and the 1996 classic “Trainspotting” by Danny Boyle.

A traveling cinema in the old tradition is the Volxkino. It has pitched its tents at unusual locations for over thirty years: between market stalls or social housing buildings, in parks or on public squares. Apart from feature films and documentaries away from the mainstream, the Volxkino also focuses on Austrian film. The event starts at Karmelitermarkt in the 2nd district on June 7. It is new this year that the Volxkino will also be showing on Karlsplatz for nine days from June 29 to July 13. At KARLSkino, all films will be shown in the original language and some with English subtitles. Admission is free of charge on all dates.

The frame[o]ut Film Festival in the MuseumsQuartier presents a colorful cross-section of documentary films and numerous independent films from around the world on 16 evenings in July and August.

dotdotdot, a festival for short films, is held again in the idyllic garden of the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art and is also celebrating its 10th birthday this year. On 15 evenings - every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - around 100 international short films and film discussions with the attending guests are on the program.
